As part of my class News and Social Media, each group had to create a news-based social media account to post on. We chose to create a page that shared Houston Based Creators and the way that the COVID-19 pandemic affected them.

The goal of the project was to foster a news based social media page and use different strategies to raise engagement. My team chose to use Instagram and Twitter as our platforms and each post would showcase a new creator along with their story. Our team specific goal was to build a community of Houston based creators, increase engagement, and consistnely post through the assigned time period. We were able to achieve these goals in a reasonable manner in the month we posted. Below are the posts that I was responsible for on our Instagram and Twitter, as well as the presentation made to our class following the project.
Welcome to Htx.local.creators
Since the beginning of COVID-19, many small businesses have struggled, and many have started. Every small business owner has had to overcome the challenges that the global pandemic has placed on our economy.
Creative small businesses have had to refine their craft and find new ways to showcase their work.
We want to know how the COVID-19 pandemic has changed the operations of creative small businesses and how they have overcome those obstacles. As well as those who have chosen to start their creative small businesses and why.
Over the next month, we will dive into these stories and much more relating to how creative small businesses have begun, changed, or failed.

Lauren’s Baking with @kneadasweet
Made from love that stems from passion, Lauren’s small business, Knead a sweet’s treats are delicious. For Lauren, baking started young, specifically with her grandma in her kitchen. And now it has offered some comfort through the difficult times of the COVID-19 pandemic. With more time at home, Lauren has been able to experiment with her baking skills and has created many tasty-looking breads, snacks, and sweets. At first, her instagram @kneadasweet, was a place to showcase her baking and encourage people to try to make their own goodies. Once people started swiping up on her stories and commenting on her posts how yummy the treats looked or how they wished they could try them. With then encouragement from friends and family, Lauren decided to open a store front through her instagram. With the pandemic still in effect, she was hesitant if people would be comfortable with her baking the goods in her home, packaging, and delivering them. As it turns out, they are! In order to make sure there is no contamination of the goods, all surfaces are cleaned and Lauren wears gloves and a mask to ensure safety. In addition, when picking up or delivering goods, masks are required and contactless pick-up and delivery is available. Overall, this opportunity has allowed Lauren to express her self in many ways. When I asked her how she feels this has allowed her express her creative side, she replied with an enthusiastic, “Definitely! I’ve always considered myself a creative person, but when I started my business I was able to flourish.” Her favorite treats to make are her delicious looking brownies because she is able to customize them for any season.

Annie’s Photography with
@anniebrowphotography
Annie Brow, a Houston-based photographer and student in the University of Houstons School of Art Block program for Photography and Digital Media, has had to overcome the challenges of being an immunocompromised person in the middle of a pandemic. In order to protect herself and others, she and the client wear masks and social distance. She also asks the clients to bring a trusted friend or family member to assist during shoots so that Annie can maintain social distancing.
Annie mostly shoots grads and couples, which also happen to be her favorite types of shoots, “I love capturing love and people and their partners. However, I LOVE college graduation sessions and they will always be one of my favorites as well.” However she likes to find time to create for herself alongside creating for her business, something being a photography student has reminded her of. After she graduates from UH, she wants to dive deeper into couples and wedding photography, and be a full-time professional photographer, which she believes she will be well prepared for by the time graduation comes.

Twitter @htxcreasmlbis
The Twitter page, was managed by me where I added the information from our Instagram posts in a Twitter-friendly format. On Twitter, there is more freedom in the frequency of posts, allowing us to be more interactive with the people who joined our community.
